Mixed-media work on heavyweight archival cotton paper
An acrylic ground and painted shapes form the composition, with crayon, ink, and oil pastel details added throughout.
Harmolodics is a musical approach to composition and improvisation developed by American jazz saxophonist and composer Ornette Coleman. His use of these ideas in the late 1970s and 1980s helped shape an adventurous strain of jazz-funk that became known as harmolodic funk.
Coleman described the relationship among musical elements this way: “harmony, melody, speed, rhythm, time and phrases all have equal position in the results that come from the placing and spacing of ideas.”
— Ornette Coleman, “Prime Time for Harmolodics,” DownBeat, July 1983.
